Monta Vista Study Buddy Society (SBS)

About

The Study Buddy Society (SBS) is a peer tutoring program where students help students achieve academic success.

This year, we are providing tutoring through three services: the SBS online forum, in-person tutoring, and virtual tutoring from the Interact club.

Online Forum

The SBS Online Forum is a discussion forum where students can communicate with their peers. This is open to all students and is separate from the in-person SBS tutoring and the Interact club. Tutors registered in SBS will have their names shown in blue.

In-Person Tutoring

Who is Study Buddies for?

New this year, Study Buddy tutoring is open to all students, regardless of their grades. However, if not enough tutors are available, preference will be given to the following students:

  • Students who received a D, F or I in Math, Science and/or English
  • Seniors who do not meet graduation requirements
  • ELD or SPED student

When does Study Buddies meet?

Study buddies are held in person in the library during the following hours:

  • Monday, Tuesday Thursday: 1:55 – 4:15 PM
  • Wednesday: 1:50 – 4:15 PM

Study Buddies Expectations

  • Sessions are typically scheduled two times a week for 45 minutes per session.
  • Students commit to an entire semester (not a drop-in program).
  • Attendance will be logged, and students are expected to come prepared with appropriate materials.
  • Illness is the only accepted reason for an excused absence. If a student is consistently absent or late, or arrives ill-prepared, they will be asked to leave the program.
  • Most students concentrate on homework in subject areas where they are having difficulty. However, tutors can also help students prepare for the High School Exit Exam.

Tutors

Tutors are current MVHS students who offer their time and expertise to fellow students at no charge. Tutors must fill out an application and partake in a brief interview and orientation to be considered for the program. Tutors must show academic strength through grades. Tutors earn volunteer hours for their tutoring services.

Tutees

All students, regardless of their grades, may request tutoring. However, availability of tutors may be limited for some courses.

Interact Tutors

The Interact club is providing free one-on-one virtual tutoring from qualified middle and high school students. Check out their website!
